Placeholder

What is a placeholder?

A placeholder is a temporary text, image or other element that serves as a space for future content. In software development, web design and forms, the term "placeholder" is often used to indicate a position or area that will later be replaced by specific information or content.

Uses of placeholders

  • Design and layout: In web development and graphic design, placeholders are used to indicate the position of text, images or other media before the final content is provided.
  • Forms: In forms, placeholder text is used to show the user what type of information should be entered into a field. For example, a placeholder in a search field may contain the text "Enter search term".
  • Data integration: Placeholders are often used to dynamically display data that is only inserted at runtime of the program, such as user information, date or other variable content.

Examples of placeholders

  • Text placeholder: "Enter here" in an input field on a web page.
  • Image placeholder: A gray rectangle with a generic image symbol that is later replaced by a real image.
  • Code placeholder: In programming, variables are often used as placeholders that are replaced by concrete values at runtime.

Script placeholder

With the script placeholder plugin in CCM19, you can create and insert placeholders for elements with a fixed location on the website. Knowledge of HTML, CSS and optionally JavaScript is required to use it. An application example would be to create a placeholder for cards inserted via JavaScript. If the card is blocked, a placeholder appears instead of an empty area.

Another example is the use of the scripts placeholder plugin to display a button in forms that allows visitors to subsequently give their consent to reCAPTCHA. This feature helps to ensure a consistent user experience, even if certain content or functions are temporarily unavailable.

For detailed information on implementing placeholders and using the scripts placeholder plugin, please visit our documentation on scripts placeholders in CCM19.
