TCF

The Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) is a standard developed by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) to meet the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive.
TCF helps to ensure the transparency and consent of users regarding the processing of their personal data, especially in the area of digital advertising and tracking.

Purpose and functions of TCF

  • Transparency:
TCF ensures that users are clearly and comprehensibly informed about what data is processed and for what purpose. This includes information about the various data processors and their purposes.
  • Consent:
It allows users to give their consent or refusal to the processing of their personal data. This consent can be granularly customized so that users can control exactly what type of processing is allowed.
  • Compliance:
By implementing TCF, companies can ensure that they comply with the legal requirements of the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive. It provides a structured method for documenting and managing consent.

Is TCF GDPR compliant?

The Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) is designed to support the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by providing a structured approach to managing user consent.
It helps to create transparency and give users control over their data, which are key requirements of the GDPR.
However, GDPR compliance is not only dependent on the use of a specific framework, but also on its correct implementation and use.
TCF provides a solid foundation for GDPR compliance, but it is important that organizations ensure that they configure the framework correctly and apply it in accordance with the specific requirements of their data protection practices. Therefore, TCF should be considered as part of a comprehensive data protection management framework and an individual review of compliance in the specific environment is advisable.

TCF versions and development

  • TCF v1.0:
The first version of TCF was introduced in 2018 and provided a basic structure for managing consent and transparency in relation to the processing of personal data.
  • TCF v2.0:
The second version of TCF, launched in 2020, brought significant improvements, including more detailed consent management and better support for the new GDPR requirements. TCF v2.0 allows users to manage their consent in more detail and provides additional transparency.

Integration of TCF

  • Integration into websites:
Websites can implement TCF by integrating an appropriate consent management tool that allows users to manage their privacy preferences.
  • Availability:
Many Consent Management Platforms (CMPs) offer support for TCF and enable easy implementation and management of consent processes.
