Do-not-track

What is Do-not-Track?

Do-not-track (DNT) is a browser feature that allows users to tell websites that they do not want to be tracked.

The DNT signal is an HTTP request sent by web browsers to inform websites that the user does not want to be tracked by tracking technologies such as cookies or web beacons.

The aim of Do-not-Track is to protect the privacy of users by limiting the collection and processing of personal data.

How does Do-not-Track work?

Activation: Users can activate the Do-not-Track function in the settings of their web browser. Once this function is activated, the browser sends a DNT signal each time a website is visited.

Response from websites: Websites that support the DNT signal should not use tracking technologies as a result or adapt the processing of user data according to the user's wishes. However, there is no legal obligation for websites to respect the DNT signal, which can lead to varying implementation.

Advantages of Do-not-Track

  • Improved privacy: DNT gives users an additional way to protect their privacy by allowing them to opt out of tracking and analysis of their online behavior.
  • Increased transparency: The use of DNT can increase awareness of privacy issues and promote transparent communication between users and websites.

Challenges with do-not-track

  • Lack of standardization: There are no uniform standards or obligations for websites to respect the DNT signal. This can lead to inconsistent privacy protection.
  • Limited acceptance: Not all websites and online services recognize or respect the DNT signal, which can limit the effectiveness of the feature.
